WHAT IS ECG TEST

ECG (Electrocardiogram) is a simple, painless, non-invasive test that measures the heart’s electrical activity.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF ECG TEST

A doctor may recommend an ECG test if a patient has symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, dizziness, or a pounding heart.

HOW IS ECG DONE:

Done in lying down position on a bed after removal of metallic substances and jewelry from body & clothes. Sensors called electrodes are placed on the chest arms and legs. Electrodes which are connected by wires record the electrical activity of the heart which is seen on a monitor and printed.

WHAT DOES ECG MEASURE:

Heart Rate – Measures the number of heartbeats per minute.

Heart Rhythm – measures the pattern of heartbeats.

P Wave – represents a signal that triggers heartbeats.

QRS Complex – represents a signal that triggers the contraction of ventricles

T Wave – represents a signal that triggers the relaxation of ventricles.

ST Segment – This helps to diagnose any ongoing ischemia process.

Other points – Measurement, deviation of waves, etc.

HOW IS ECG READ:

With the advent of artificial intelligence and computers, electronic machines give preliminary interpretations of the tracing. However, a Physician trained in ECG reading is the person who reports the ECG.

WHEN IS REPORT AVAILABLE:

Preliminary electronic reports are available immediately; however, tracings are forwarded to a cardiologist on the phone and can be reported quickly.

ADVANTAGES:

An early detection of heart conditions and prompt follow-up action may turn out to be a LIFE-SAVING act.

CAN ECG BE DONE AT HOME:

ECG can be done anywhere, in homes, offices, roads, or any other place. The machines are battery-operated and hence do not need an electrical connection.

NOTE:

ECG does not report blocked arteries, These are detected through angiograms. If ECG shows serious heart conditions immediate hospitalization should be done, without wasting time. There is no chance of electrocution in ECG
