What is Tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that has plagued humanity for centuries. Despite breakthroughs in medical knowledge, it remains of the top 10 killers globally. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It primarily impacts the lungs, but it can spread to other parts of the body, including the kidneys, spine, and brain. This airborne disease spreads when an infected person coughs, sneezes, releasing tiny droplets of bacteria into the air. It affects people with weakened immune system & malnutrition interacting in crowded places.
Diagnosis
– X-ray Chest
– Sputum test for acid fast bacilli
– Molecular identification of tuberculous bacilli
– Exposure can be treated by skin test (Mantoux) and more sophisticated TB Gold test
Prevention
– Vaccination (BCG)
– Good hygiene
– Good nutrition & Healthy living
Treatment
Certainly treatable with selected antibiotics over a period of time, under a doctor’s supervision.
